After our final game of Phase One, and being back to winning ways for Thunder, it was time for Laura Malcolm and I to jet off to Jamaica for a three match England Test Series. Leaving the snow and minus temperatures behind, we were greeted at the airport with 30 degree heat and a police escort to take us to our hotel, this however consisted of driving into oncoming traffic, going through red lights and some near misses which definitely had our coach Anna Mayes covering her eyes!
We were straight into action when we arrived with our first week consisting of several training sessions, recovery sessions and video analysis as well as two practice games and cramming in the odd hour in the sun.
With our first game fast approaching, keeping out the sun, hydration and rest were the main focuses of the squad and this worked a treat as we came out 53-42 winners and our very own Laura Malcolm getting player of the match!
The second test came just 24 hours after the first, and with the help of 'beenieman' being pre-match entertainment, the squad were hyped ready for the game. With a less consistent performance, we still came out on top, this time with just five in it (50-45). The crowd in Jamaica are unbelievably loud and this definitely helped the home side sneak back into the game during the final quarter!
After a day of rest and tourism we went into the third and final test against Jamaica, hoping for another series whitewash and this is what we achieved with a 50-36 win. This was the biggest winning margin of the series. Our final day in Jamaica was spent at the Dunns River Falls and nearby beaches catching some much needed sun before heading back to the artic conditions of the UK.
We are straight back into action with only a couple of days before we start the challenging task of defending our title, but with the squad we have we definitely won't be going down without a fight. We are still confident we will be in the Superleague Grand Final come the 25th May!! I Hope to see you all at our first game versus Yorkshire Jets on 13th April, we need your support as you've been a great '8th man' for us all season!!
