SUPER-STRIKER SIGNS FOR MANCHESTER
MANCHESTER has another super-striker to rank alongside Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and United’s Robin Van Persie.
National netball champs ManchesterThunder have signed up top-class shooter, Janelle Lawson, from Australia for a second year running.
The 6ft 4in tall all-action Goal Attack from Perth Western Australia, helped Manchester Thunder to its first Fiat Netball Superleague title since the superleague franchise started in 2005.
Now the shooter who’s the second tallest player in the Superleague has re-signed for Manchester Thunder and aims to repeat the stunning form she showed last season to help Manchester Thunder to a second title when the season starts in February 2013.
Janelle, a former Australian Under 21 player, had a strike rate of more than 85%. Out of the 507 shots she had on goal over the season, 433 went through the net. In two matches, she had a 100% shots success.
She’s a journalism graduate and while staying in Manchester plans to pass on her netball skills and know-how to junior players attending Manchester Thunder’s netball camps.
Thunder have been able to re-sign Janelle to the squad for the second year running, thanks to sponsorship from UKBifold who have a base in Heywood. It’s part of a sponsorship scheme that sees all Manchester Thunder’s first team squad players being supported by local companies.
Debbie Hallas, Manchester Thunder Director, commented: “It’s brilliant that we’ve managed to keep Janelle in the squad for a second year as we set out to defend our title. She was a valuable addition to Manchester Thunder last year and there’s no doubt her shooting stats helped us to some important victories.
Janelle said: “I had a great experience playing for Thunder in the Superleague last year, topped off by winning the Grand Final to go with our Fastnet trophy.
“I made some great friends here who made me feel very welcome, and it made my decision to come back so easy. I am looking forward to another successful season.”
